Brief history

The first head of the Department of Faculty Therapy is Honored Scientist of the Kyrgyz SSR, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Miron Efimovich Volsky. 

M.E. Volsky entered the former Petrograd Psychoneurological Institute in 1915 and completed his medical education in 1920 at the medical faculty of Saratov University. Since 1921, M.E., Volsky began working at the hospital therapeutic clinic of Kuibyshev University, where he consistently completed the entire school of positions - from clinical resident to head of the department.

From 1939 to 1940, M.E. Volsky was the head of the Department of Therapy at the Kuibyshev Military Medical Academy. In 1941, M.E. Volsky became the head of the Department of Faculty Therapy at the Kyrgyz Medical Institute. M.E. Volsky remained in this position until the last days of his life.

M.E. Volsky's scientific interests were diverse and multifaceted. During work at the Kuibyshev Medical Institute, M.E. Volsky expressed interest for studying the pathology of the liver and biliary tract, malaria, balneology, rheumatism and the cardiovascular system. Subsequently, the range of M.E. Volsky's scientific interests expanded at the Kyrgyz Medical Institute. Continuing to study the pathology of the liver and biliary tract, he began to pay special attention to the study of the effects on the human body of short-term and long-term stay in the highlands of Kyrgyzstan and resort factors of the Kyrgyz SSR, as well as to some general issues of therapy.

M.E. Volsky left behind a great scientific legacy, in addition to the fundamental work that served as the topic of his doctoral thesis on the use of sand baths in the treatment of diseases of the musculoskeletal system, he published over 60 scientific papers on the above problems. In his scientific works, he proved himself as a deeply erudite internist scientist with a broad general biological outlook, a talented clinician - innovator, an observant and widely educated doctor who accepted and continued in his versatile activities the best traditions of domestic therapeutic schools.

The government highly appreciated the work of M.E. Volsky and awarded him 2 orders - the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, the Order of the “Badge of Honor”, two medals and certificates of honor of the Supreme Soviet of the Kyrgyz SSR. The Central Committee of the KP of Kyrgyzstan and the Council of Ministers of the Kyrgyz SSR, taking into account the great merits of Professor M.E. Volsky for the development of medical science and health care of the Kyrgyz SSR, decided to perpetuate the memory of Professor M.E. Volsky by publishing selected works of his that are of interest to doctors of various specialties - therapists, physiotherapists, balneologists, pediatricians.

From 1959 to 1962, the Department of Faculty Therapy was headed by Associate Professor Rosa Iskhakovna Ibragimova. She continued the research initiated by Professor M.E. Volsky, dedicated to the research of the effect of the mineral waters of the Jety - Oguz resort on the secretory apparatus of the stomach and bile secretion.

From 1962 to 1997, the Department of Faculty Therapy was headed by the Hero of Socialist Labor, Academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR, Academician of the Academy of Sciences of Kyrgyzstan, laureate of the State Prize of the USSR and the Kyrgyz SSR, Professor Mirrakhimov M.M.

In 1948, he graduated with honors from the Kyrgyz State Medical Institute. Subsequently, he studied in clinical residency at the Department of Faculty Therapy of the KSMU, after which, in 1952, he defended his PhD thesis. After that, he started working, having worked his way up from an assistant to the head of the named department.

From 1963 to 1978, he was the vice-rector of the KSMI for Science. In 1966, Mirrakhimov M.M. was awarded the degree of Doctor of Medical Sciences and in the same year he became a professor. In 1969, Professor Mirrakhimov M.M. was elected a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, in 1974 a full member of the Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz SSR. In 1988, he became a full member of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences.

Mirrakhimov M.M. is the founder of a new direction in science – alpine medicine. A significant place in the research of Professor M.M.Mirrakhimov is occupied by the issues of the ecological physiology of mountaineers, particularly the native and displaced population of the mountains, the study of immunological and genetic criteria of adaptation and disadaptation complications, the prediction of mountain sickness.

From 1997 to the present, the Department of Faculty Therapy has been headed by the Honored Doctor of the Kyrgyz Republic, laureate of the Prize of the Youth Union of the Kyrgyz Republic, laureate of the State Prize in Science and Technology, MD, Professor Mirrakhimov E.M. He is the president of the Kyrgyz Society of Cardiology, a member of the Society of Cardiologists of the CIS and Turkic-speaking countries. He has published more than 200 scientific papers, which are published not only in scientific journals of Kyrgyzstan and Russia, but also in peer-reviewed journals in Europe and the USA. Under his leadership, 2 doctoral and 12 PhD theses were defended.

During the existence of the Department of General Practice Therapy with a family medicine course, classes were held for students of 3-6 courses, clinical residents, graduate students, interns were trained in the following specialties "physician", "nephrologist", "gastroenterologist", "cardiologist" more than 150 clinical residents and more than 10 graduate students were trained. 6 PhD theses have been defended. Researches were conducted in the following areas: "Polymorphism of the angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) gene in patients with essential and uncomplicated nephropathy with an assessment of the use of enalapril" (2004); The effect of ACE gene polymorphism on the prognosis of chronic glomerulonephritis (2002); The effects of erythropoietin therapy and combination of erythropoietin with hypoxic pressure chamber training on the course of anemia in chronic glomerulonephritis (2016).

In 2016, the Department of "Internal Diseases of the 6th year of the KSMA named after Academician Mirsaid Mirrakhimov" and the department of "Faculty Therapy named after Volsky M.E."  were merged to the newly formed Department of Faculty Therapy named after Mirrakhimov M.M. – Volsky M.E.

Professor M.M. Mirrakhimov embodied human qualities such as kindness, responsiveness, caring, rigor, and the ability to be an interesting interlocutor.

Along with M.M. Mirrakhimov, such famous scientists as: Z.M. Kudaiberdiev, A.R. Raimzhanov, Zh.S.Rafibekova, B.Ya. Grinstein, A.D. Dzhaylobaev, R.I. Rudenko, etc. worked at the department during this period.

Since 1995, the department has been heading by the laureate of the Youth Prize of the Kyrgyz Republic, laureate of the State Prize of the Kyrgyz Republic, Honored Doctor of the Kyrgyz Republic, MD, Professor E.M.Mirrakhimov.

Educational and methodological work

Having united the best teaching and scientific personnel, the department conducts active pedagogical, research and medical work.

Teaching methods are constantly being improved, methodological developments are updated (lectures, practical exercises, situational tasks, tests, ECG).

Methodological work is underway. Currently, the department has published more than 20 teaching aids on various sections of internal organ diseases in Russian, 2 of which are in English.

Employees of the Department of Faculty Therapy named after. M.E. Volsky - M.M. Mirrakhimov has studied and continues to conduct research on the characteristics of metabolic syndrome in ethnic Kyrgyz people, the problems of insulin resistance and hyperlipidemia, the incidence of familial hypercholesterolemia, the prevalence of arterial hypertension, and genetic characteristics in patients with metabolic syndrome. Since 2014 the staff of the department with the support of the Ministry of Health of the Kyrgyz Republic, KSMA named after. I.K. Akhunbaeva regularly organizes annual congresses of the Kyrgyz Society of Cardiology (KSC) and the scientific symposium “Silk Road Medicine”. The program of the KOC Congresses covers the most current and important issues of cardiology and internal medicine, including the participation of eminent lecturers - top-class specialists, leading professors of the EOC, the Russian Federation, and neighboring countries. Among the listeners and active participants of the KOC Congresses are residents, graduate students, as well as practitioners not only from medical institutions in Bishkek and surrounding areas, but also from all regions of the Kyrgyz Republic.

Employees of the Department of Faculty Therapy under the leadership of Professor Mirrakhimov E.M. take an active part in the work of international studies and registries, such as PURE (Prospective Urban and Rural Epidemiology) study, Europaspire V study, Global Burden of Disease (GBD) collaboration, Non-communicable disease ( NCD) collaboration, ILEP (International Lipid Expert Panel) collaboration, Familial Hyperlipidemia Studies (FHSC) collaboration, Screen-Pro FH collaboration, SURF-RA and SURF-SLE studies (Study on the control of cardiovascular risk factors in Systemic lupus erythematosus and Antiphospholipid syndrome; Assessment of the prevalence of risk factors for cardiovascular diseases and the effectiveness of their control in patients with rheumatoid arthritis), in many registries conducted by the European Observational Research Program of European Society of Cardiology (EORP-ESC). The results of the collaboration are reflected in publications in leading journals such as the Lancet and other journals in the Lancet family, New England Journal of Cardiology, Nature and other journals in the Nature family, European Heart Journal and other journals in the European Heart Journal, Circulation, Journal of American College of Cardiology and in many other foreign magazines.

Employees of the Department of Faculty Therapy are actively involved in scientific activities. The result of the qualifying scientific work is a successful defense in 2022 by Associate Professor I.T. Murkamilov. doctoral dissertation “Prevalence, clinical and pathogenetic aspects of the formation of chronic kidney disease in residents of urban and rural areas in the Kyrgyz Republic.”
